PARTAY!!!

So, as you now know, our beloved Calli is writing a cookbook. That's right. A gathering of delectable recipes for you to grace your oven with… But there's a catch. This book, it cost money to make. Like dolla-dolla bills. 

What better way to figure out how to make some of that money than to have a big ol' birthday party?!?! And that's exactly what we're goina do, friends. Get your party hats ready because Calli is turning 24, and on March 25th the following magic is going to happen in order to make our girl's dreams come true. Check the deets! / Nicole

We’re celebrating the crowdfunding campaign launch for Calli Marie BAKES at Intuition Ale Works on Friday, March 25th with a super-duper party complete with a DJ, food truck, and of course… BEER! Treats? Of course, there will be treats, it’s a cookbook launch! We’ll have samples of four different recipes from the cookbook for you to nosh on.

The party is free to attend but you MUST register through Eventbrite (link here). Remember, we’re trying to raise some money to do the dang thing and we need all the help we can get. Donations can be made through Eventbrite, or even better, you can contribute to the Kickstarter campaign at the party to pre-order the book itself and score other cool rewards.

 

Pinch me (no, not me, her. pinch her!)

BAKES WEEK ONE. Man, writing a book is hard. The whole team and I have been rolling with the punches and learning as we go. We finally had our first photoshoot and all of this has become tangible for me. I am nervous, excited, and in awe. My life has been a whirlwind of cake and photoshoots and Nicole has been at the receiving end of all of my frustration. She explains my life better than me so, here we go. -  C

Occasionally I'll get a text message from Calli noting how exhausted she is. Don't get me wrong, she's happy-exhausted, even delirious at times. My all-time favorite is this… 

"I'm a shell of a human."

When I hear that from Calli, I know she's tapped. We've all been there, right? Depleted from whatever 18-wheeler life has run over us with. What's different about Calli though (and as a mother to 3 kiddos, I feel I can say this), is she allows herself moments to feel like "a shell of a human" and then she puts on her big girl panties and marches on. Me? I am more in the "I can't even" camp, but this isn't about me. 

I digress… Last week, Calli's text messages ranged from the above mentioned to complete and total elation. She had a photo shoot for her cookbook. And it was awesome and smart and fun and beautiful.

While she experienced raw and honest moments consisting of "oh, this is why not everyone writes a book,"  she also took time to breathe in the fact that she got to do the damn thing in her house slippers… with her dear friends… in her house! 

How frickin-frackin great is that!?! 

Calli made pie dough for 3+ hours while being photographed in her quaint Florida bungalow, and couldn't stop giggling simply from the joy of it all. I later texted her that evening that she was my Penny Lane, and reminded her that in deed, "it's all happening."

She is super excited to introduce you to her friends, her team, her posse of people in the coming weeks and months. This cookbook is very much a labor of love for Calli, and like most enormous and worthwhile projects, it takes a village. 

Not unlike a virgin

BLOGGING FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME. I hate blogging, can I just say that? Thankfully I have people like my dear friend and bad ass writer, Nicole. She has taken my website, this blog, and my life and reorganized it all. I am slowly starting to get back into this online world of journaling and am so excited to share this space with all of you! You will hear from Nicole, most of the time, as she joins me in this crazy adventure of book writing (yeah I said BOOK WRITING) more on that later, baking, coffee shop running, and eating. I have a cake to get back to but cheers to the beginning, friends.  

I'm creeping on Calli up at Brew, as she creates yet another tasty dish. In fact, I think some of the folks who frequent here, come to see Calli create and move through this teensy pocket-sized coffee/beer house. It's shotgun style. You walk through the glass door and it's a straight path back to Calli's comfort zone. Nice long bar on the right, similarly lengthy community-style tables to the left. Kitchen in the back; and that's where you'll find our girl, most of the time.

She's magnetic; moving throughout the itty bitty quarters with ease and confidence, slightly neurotic, messy at times, but always confident.

"86 those chorizo tacos," she says. Another brunch special has sold out completely. It's not even 1 pm. 

"If she just made stuff that wasn't so damn tasty," I overhear a patron say with a hearty chuckle. And he's absolutely right.

That's how scrumptious her food is, and how incredible of a human she is. Elegant and chaotic. Beaming and exhausted. Mid-conversation with me and then hearing the overflow of the cold brew distilling in the back. 

"Oh shit! We're spilling over. Does someone hear that?" Momentary trauma taken care of in just a few blinks of an eye.

I suppose that's how Calli has to live her life right now. Moment by moment. Maybe even day by day, though I feel like that is even too much right now. She is amongst chaos yet gracefully moving through life with a toothy grin, in total amazement for what has become of her life.
